When I was pregnant with my first child, I grabbed my brother (a father of 2) to get help with registering for my baby showers. Because buying a stroller is like choosing a car!! He guided me towards things that were really necessary vs. a nice to have. Fast forward to bringing my son home where everything was set up. Immediately we had a problem on the changing table that was set up on my son’s dresser. Critical items were being tossed or slipped off the back and fell behind the heavy dresser. I quickly started googling for a solution since there is something for everything baby – I must have missed something. There. Was. Nothing.
Unfortunately, in life, everyone has other things going on that cause us to change course. My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years before I had my son. But at the time he was born, my family realized that my mother was no longer able to live on her own. So, when he was 4 months old, my mother moved in with my husband, son and me. I was working full time primarily from home, had a new baby and was now my mother’s primary caregiver. Something that would change my life forever. If you have ever had anyone close to you diagnosed with any form of dementia, you know how excruciating it is to witness. To see someone you love completely change into a different person before your eyes, is a gut punch set on repeat. “Life” stepped in again when my son was 15 months old. I was laid off from my job after 22 years. Just another life changing event. The silver lining…I remembered the problem I had when my son was born (and all those items that were still sitting behind his dresser!!). More importantly, I remembered the idea that had never left my head. Now was the time to invent The EdgeWedge™!!
